JBay Wrap Up & Stats

MICK SLIPS DOWN THE LADDER; PARKO RACES 1000+ POINTS CLEAR
EVENT 5, J-Bay 2009… Mick went to South Africa ranked 5th in the world after a reasonable start to the year with an average event result of 5.50 and 3 final rounds appearances from the first 4 events.
Mick went out of the event having only surfed one heat for the first time in his career. For the third time this season the tour used the elimination system. At Bells and Tahiti Mick won his starting heat in round 2, but at J-Bay he fell short. He finished 17th, dropped to 7th position and is now 1726 points behind Parko.
Parko won J-Bay on the 10th anniversary of his first win there as a wildcard. He dominated the event from start to finish with perfect timing, perfect scores and an event average score of 16.97. Along the way Joel took out Heath Joske by 9.07 points, Perrow (6.20), Martinez (4.83), Otton (1.36) and then Damo (4.03) in the final. It was a faultless performance.
Round 2; This was the starting point for Mick, he came up against fellow Red Bull Team Rider Michel Bourez in what turned out to be a classic high-scoring heat. The Rookie took out Mick with a heat score of 18.27 to Mick’s 17.17. This combined heat score of 35.44 points is the 20th highest combined heat score in history. Only 24 combined heat scores over 35.00 have been posted in history. It is the second highest man on man combined score ever posted at J-Bay… The highest was Occy v Bruce Irons 2005 = 36.26, Bruce won with a 18.43…
Mick went to J-Bay looking for his 50th heat score over 17.00, he may have lost his first heat but he did post his 50th excellent score (17.17). Mick’s highest ever score was a 19.60 posted on the Gold Coast in event 1 of 2003, this event was the first two-wave scoring event, the start of the two-wave era…

With three keepers from the first 5 events (3rd .. 5th .. 5th) Mick needs keepers all the way home to win the title. Preferably firsts with only 5 events left.

Event 6 is  Trestles, This event has been good to Mick, his worst result was in his best ever season, 2007. His past results: 2003-5th … 2004-Inj … 2005-3rd … 2006-5th … 2007-17th … 2008-5th. Only two scores over 19.00 have been posted at Trestles, Slater 19.60 last year and Mick Fanning 19.13 in 2003. Mick’s 2 wave era record there stands at 20 heats surfed for 14 wins.. 70% win ratio. Has an average heat score at Trestles in the high 15 range. Two high 7 point rides per heat. Good Luck, mate! Mike Newman
