New Sleds
“A few people have been asking me about my boards recently. Thought I’d give you guys the lowdown. Over the past couple of years my shaper Darren Handley and I have found a design that really suits me, so despite subtle curve adjustments my boards haven’t changed all that much. I’ve been riding a 6’1” x 18 1/4” x 2 3/16” rounded square-tail with single concave into double through the fins. Last year though I watched Kelly ride 5′10″s and he seemed to be surfing better than ever. His equipment looked really lively and his turns were always on the money. It inspired me to try chopping half an inch off the tail. I noticed the change instantly, It felt like my board fit better in the pocket and I found that I had more options as I approached the lip. It’s amazing with surfboards how such small changes can alter the performance and reinvigorate your surfing. My new allrounder is 6′1/2″ x 18 1/4″ x 2 3/16″. Can’t wait to hit the bowl at Bells on these new puppies next week. Gonna be fun! The little Bells teaser on Rip Curl’s site has me psyched!”
