Gold Coast Wrap Up & Stats

Mick Fanning went into event 1 – the Quiksilver Pro – on the Gold Coast as the world number eight, by the end of the event he was up to the number three spot. Mick finished the event in equal 3rd position after losing out to Joel Parkinson in a first class Semi Final. Joel ended up going all the way to win his 7th tour event and his claim his first victory since France in 2006 (26 events later).

Joel posted a 10 and a 9.93 to beat Mick in the semi final – he had to – Mick had 17.66 on the board as well. Together the boys put together the fourth highest combined heat total ever posted on the Gold Coast (37.59).

The highest was Mick’s Quarter Final win against Kerr in 2007 when they posted 38.63 between them. Mick scored a 19.53 to win and Kerr’s score is the highest losing score in history 19.10. This heat is the highest ever on the gold Coast and is second highest in the history of the two-wave format.
NEXT: The World Tour moves to the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach. Mick’s attack on Bells in the past have included a win, eight years ago as a wild card in 2001; In 02 he placed 17th at Bells in his first year on tour. The first two years he competed at Bells was in three-wave scoring system. Since 2003 (the two-wave scoring era) Mick has loved Bells, claiming a 3rd… 5th… 9th… 5th… 3rd and a 5th. In those six events hid average result is 5th. Mick has won 19 of his 28 two-wave scoring heats at Bells (67%). Mick’s best hunting grounds for results are still ahead of us: at Trestles his average result is a 3.3. In Brazil and Spain it’s a 3.7.
